how to answer

“Why do you want to work here” — an answer that isn’t flattery

what they’re actually asking

This question is a proxy for two things: did you do any homework, and is there a real reason you’ll still be here in a year? “Your company is a leader in the space” fails both. The winning shape is an overlap claim: something specifically true about them, crossed with something specifically true about you.

what interviewers listen for

the common failure

The interchangeable answer — “I love your culture and mission” — which the interviewer hears as “I have eight interviews this week.” In a market where AI writes everyone’s applications, generic enthusiasm is the fastest way to sound like everyone else’s template.

build your answer (yours, not a sample)

We don’t hand out sample answers — memorized scripts collapse under follow-up questions, and interviewers can hear them. Instead, excavate your own material:

  1. Find one concrete thing they’ve done that you’d actually defend in an argument — a product decision, a stance, a way they work. That’s your homework detail.
  2. Complete honestly: “I keep choosing work that involves ___, and this role is the most ___ version of that I’ve found.”
  3. Say the quiet part usefully: if compensation/remote/stability is part of the truth, pair it with the professional reason — grounded beats gushing.

now practice it out loud

Read your draft out loud and ask: could I say this sentence to their competitor without changing a word? If yes, take two exists to fix exactly that — swap the generic sentence for your homework detail and hear it become an answer only you could give.

first try

“I’ve just always admired this company, you’re a leader in the industry and the culture seems amazing…”

one fix later

“You moved support in-house last year when everyone else outsourced it — I read the postmortem. I’ve spent three years arguing support is a product function. That’s the overlap.”
