how to answer

How to answer “why should we hire you” without bragging or shrinking

what they’re actually asking

This is not “are you great?” It’s “have you understood what we need, and can you connect yourself to it out loud?” The interviewer is offering you the closing argument slot. Most candidates use it to repeat adjectives about themselves; strong candidates use it to repeat the company’s problem back with their name attached.

what interviewers listen for

the common failure

The adjective pile: “I’m hardworking, I’m a fast learner, I’m a team player.” It fails because it’s unfalsifiable — every candidate says it, so it carries no information. The interviewer’s eyes glaze; yours would too.

build your answer (yours, not a sample)

We don’t hand out sample answers — memorized scripts collapse under follow-up questions, and interviewers can hear them. Instead, excavate your own material:

  1. Name the company’s actual problem this role exists to solve. (It’s in the job description’s first three bullets, usually.)
  2. Pick ONE thing you’ve done that most resembles that problem. Real, specific, yours.
  3. Draft the bridge sentence: “You need X. I’ve done the closest thing to X, which is Y. That’s why this fits.”

now practice it out loud

This one dies from hedging. Record a take and count your qualifiers (“I think,” “kind of,” “hopefully”). The retake’s one fix: delete them. Nothing else changes — just say the same thing without the escape hatches, and hear the difference.

first try

“I mean, I think I’m a really hard worker, and I feel like I’d probably be a good fit for the culture…”

one fix later

“You’re hiring this role to stop losing deals in onboarding. I rebuilt onboarding at my last job and cut churn 20%. That’s the job, and I’ve done it.”
