How to answer “tell me about yourself” — without a script

what they’re actually asking

It sounds like small talk. It isn’t. This is the interviewer asking: “give me the two-minute version of why this conversation makes sense.” They want the shape of you — not your biography. The answer that works is a trailer, not the whole movie.

what interviewers listen for

• A through-line: do your last few choices add up to a direction, and does this role sit on it?
• Selection: did you pick the three things that matter for this job, or recite everything?
• Landing: does it end somewhere on purpose — ideally at “and that’s why I’m here” — or trail off?

the common failure

The chronological ramble. You start at college, narrate every job (“and then… and then…”), realize you’ve been talking for four minutes, and finish with “…so yeah.” In our research, this is the answer people most often describe rehearsing in the shower — and still fumbling live, because a mental outline isn’t a spoken rep.

build your answer (yours, not a sample)

We don’t hand out sample answers — memorized scripts collapse under follow-up questions, and interviewers can hear them. Instead, excavate your own material:

1. Write down the three facts about you that made THIS company interview you. Not your whole resume — three.
2. Find the thread: what do your last two roles (or projects, or the switch you made) have in common that points at this job?
3. Choose your landing sentence first. If the last line is “and that’s why this role made sense to me,” everything before it has a destination.

now practice it out loud

Say it out loud, off the top of your head, and time it. Over two minutes? You’re narrating, not selecting. Do the retake focusing on one fix only: cut everything that doesn’t point at the landing sentence.
