What to wear to your first interview: decide once, then practice

The outfit is the most-googled, least-decisive part of interview prep. It gets the worry because it is the one variable you can see, and it feels productive to obsess over. Here is the honest version: the outfit can only lose you points, never win them, and it is fully solvable in ten minutes with a formula. Solve it tonight, hang it up, and spend the freed-up evening on the part that actually gets people hired.

The formula: one step above their everyday

Find out what people at this company actually wear (their careers page, team photos, LinkedIn) and dress one notch above it. Jeans culture means slacks or a skirt and a nice top. Business casual means add the blazer. Truly can't tell? Business casual is the safe middle for a first job interview almost everywhere. Clean, fitted, and simple beats fancy at every level.

Comfort is a performance decision, not a compromise

Interview anxiety already taxes your working memory; an itchy waistband, brand-new heels, or a top you keep adjusting is attention you cannot spare. Everything you wear should be something you have worn before. Sit down in it, walk in it, reach in it. Nothing makes its debut on interview day.

Lay it out the night before

The whole outfit, out on the bed or floor, down to shoes and bag. Two minutes, and it does more than save the morning scramble: it closes the question. Decided is the feeling you are after, because every decision you finish tonight is worry your brain cannot recycle at 2am.

Then spend the saved evening on what you'll say

Nobody gets hired for the blazer. Interviewers remember how you answered, and a perfect outfit buys you exactly zero fumbled questions. The night-before time the outfit no longer needs goes to five spoken answers: say each out loud, fix one thing, say it again. That is the prep that shows up in the room.

Practice this out loud with a coach in Messages. Outfit on the floor, done. Now text jobpls your five likely questions tonight: voice memo each one, get one specific fix, retake. Tomorrow you walk in wearing a decision you already made, saying answers you have already said.
