Interviewing with no experience: evidence you didn't know you had
from the job pls team · practice guide, not a script
Every entry-level thread has the same complaint: the job wants experience, the interview asks for stories, and you have a degree, a part-time job, and panic. Here is the reframe the interview actually runs on: at entry level, nobody expects a track record. They expect evidence of trajectory, and that evidence is buildable from what you already have, if you practice saying it.
Decode what entry-level interviews actually grade
Not experience. Coachability, reliability, and whether you can think out loud. The questions sound experience-shaped (“tell me about a time…”), but the interviewer is grading how you handle them, not the seniority of the story. A group project told with ownership and a specific lesson beats a vague internship every time.
Inventory the evidence you do have
Class projects with deadlines. A retail shift with an angry customer. A club you organized, a team you kept together, a thing you built for fun. Anything where you did something with stakes and other people counts. Write down five, and for each: what went wrong, what you did, what you would do differently. That is a story bank. Seniority was never a requirement.
Kill the apology reflex
The failure mode is not the thin resume, it is the apology for it: “I don't really have experience, but…” They posted an entry-level job on purpose; opening with the apology invites them to doubt their own decision. The practiced version states the evidence without the disclaimer, and the difference out loud is enormous.
Practice out loud, because polish is your whole differentiator
Here is the uncomfortable math: when no candidate has a track record, the interview is nearly all delivery. That is bad news for the unrehearsed and great news for you, because delivery trains fast. Retrieval practice beats re-reading (61% versus 40% in the classic study), and at entry level, spoken reps are most of the gap between you and everyone else holding the same empty resume.
Practice this out loud with a coach in Messages. jobpls does not care that your stories come from class projects and closing shifts. Voice memo, one fix, retake, three questions a day. The first practiced answer is free, and the apology reflex usually dies in take two.
