Career switcher interviews: make the switch the story

Switching careers means every interview opens with the same unasked question: why is a teacher, an analyst, a nurse sitting in this chair? Until you answer it, the interviewer does the translation of your background themselves, badly. Career switchers rarely lose on skills. They lose on an untold story, and stories are the most practiceable thing in an interview.
The switch IS your “tell me about yourself” now
Your old answer expired the day you decided to switch. The new one has a required shape: what you did, what pulled you here (toward, not away), and what you have already done about it. Courses, projects, freelance reps: the concrete steps are what turn “career change” from a whim into a plan in the interviewer's ears.
Translate, don't apologize
Every field has skills that carry. A teacher runs stakeholder management daily; a bartender does high-volume triage under pressure. The interviewer will not do that translation for you. Take your top three old-career stories and practice the translated telling: same story, told in the destination field's vocabulary. Said out loud twice, the translation stops sounding like a stretch and starts sounding like your resume.
Pre-practice the doubt question
It is coming in some form: “this is a big change, how do we know it will stick?” or “you would be starting over, is that okay?” This is the answer that most needs to sound calm, and it cannot be calm on take one. The content is direction plus evidence of commitment. The delivery is flat and unbothered, which is pure practice. Rehearse until the question stops spiking your pulse.
Expect the salary conversation, out loud
Switching often means a level reset, and the compensation question lands differently when your last salary sat in another field's band. Decide your range and your one-sentence framing (“I priced this against the new field, not my old title”) and say both out loud before a recruiter hears them. Composure here is reps, nothing else.
