how to answer
“What is your greatest strength”: claim it, then prove it
from the job pls team · practice guide, not a script
what they’re actually asking
The mirror of the weakness question, and the one people underprepare because it sounds easy. The interviewer is not asking for your best quality in the abstract. They are asking: of everything you could claim, can you pick the one thing THIS job runs on, and back it with proof? A strength without evidence is just an adjective with confidence.
what interviewers listen for
- Relevance: is the strength load-bearing for this role, or just something you like about yourself?
- Proof attached: one specific result or story that makes the claim checkable, not a vibe.
- Comfort claiming it: can you say “I am good at this” plainly, without shrinking it or inflating it?
the common failure
The modest shrug. People who can list a coworker's strengths for ten minutes go vague about their own: “I guess I'd say I'm pretty organized?” The upward inflection gives it away. That is not humility, it is an unpracticed sentence. Claiming a strength out loud is a skill, and the first time you do it should not be in the interview.
build your answer (yours, not a sample)
We don’t hand out sample answers — memorized scripts collapse under follow-up questions, and interviewers can hear them. Instead, excavate your own material:
- List what people come to you for. The thing coworkers, classmates, or friends keep asking your help with is a strength with witnesses.
- Cross that list against the job description: which candidate does this role actually run on? Pick that one, even if it is not your favorite.
- Attach the receipt: one time this strength changed an outcome. “I am X, and the clearest example is Y.” Claim plus evidence, two sentences.
now practice it out loud
Record a take and listen for shrink words: “I guess,” “pretty,” “kind of.” The retake has one fix: same claim, shrink words deleted, receipt attached. Flat and factual. It will feel like bragging. It will sound like an answer.
“Umm, I'd probably say I'm a people person? Like I feel like I'm pretty good with people, I guess.”
“Deadlines. I have shipped every release on time for two years, including two where scope changed late. If this role lives or dies on delivery, that is what I bring.”
