can you practice interviews with ChatGPT? yes. and it’s not enough.
from the job pls team · updated August 2026 · we make a competing tool, so we have written this to be checkable, not flattering.
what ChatGPT is genuinely great at
Use it for these without hesitation. Researching the company and role. Generating likely questions for your specific job posting. Pressure-testing your written stories: paste a draft answer and ask what a skeptical interviewer would poke at. Tightening your “tell me about yourself” on paper. It is free or cheap, available at 2am, and better read on interview formats than most humans you know.
where typed practice quietly fails
The interview is a speaking task, and typing does not train speaking. A perfect written answer often vanishes when you have to say it, because reading and writing store material differently than producing it out loud. Memory research calls this the production effect: material you say aloud sticks better than material you read, and practicing retrieval beats re-reading 61% to 40% a week later. ChatGPT’s voice mode can run a spoken mock interview, and if you will actually do that regularly, it is a real option. In practice most people don’t, for a boring reason: you have to drive every session yourself. Open the app, set up the exercise, keep it on track, remember to come back tomorrow. The tool waits for you. Nothing pulls you back.
what a coach adds that a chatbot doesn’t
This is the part where we describe what we built, so discount for bias. job pls is a voice interview coach in your text messages. The difference is not intelligence, it is structure: the coach texts first, so practice starts without you summoning willpower. You answer by voice memo, out loud, which is the skill being tested. Feedback is one specific fix, not a page of tips, and then you say the answer again while it is fresh. It remembers your stories and your interview date and follows up. Reps take about a minute.
One thing we deliberately do not do: write answers for you, or whisper them to you live in an interview. Tools that do get candidates caught and offers pulled. Practice is the legal advantage. Nothing to detect, because it is just skill.
the honest recipe
Use ChatGPT to research the company, list likely questions, and sharpen your stories on paper. Then say those answers out loud somewhere that listens and pushes back, five times before interview day. Written prep plus spoken reps. Most candidates do only the first half.
